"Devastation is not enough word to explain the situation."
This is what a Palestinian woman said as she watched her neighbors die in bombings and struggled to access food and fuel. Over the past seven months, Israeli attacks on Palestine have resulted in at least 34,568 Palestinian deaths, with 77,765 others injured. Including more than 10,000 people buried under the rubble in the Gaza Strip, the death toll is estimated to exceed 40,000 with women and children making up approximately 70% of the deceased.
Israel is urging the evacuation of Rafah, while bombing it, where 1.5 million Palestinian refugees have gathered. Israel’s blockade of Gaza’s access to food and medical supplies is causing immense suffering for the 60,000 pregnant women there, who lack clean water and essential medical services. More than 30 people have died in Gaza from malnutrition and other food-related issues due to the blockade.
It’s crucial not to overlook the fact that Israel’s violence and Genocide against Palestinians did not just start on October 7th last year but back to May 15th, 1948, when Zionists unilaterally declared the establishment of the state of Israel on Palestinian land, displacing its indigenous inhabitants. This marked the beginning of what Palestinians refer to as the ‘Nakba’(Day of Catastrophe). Since 2007, Israel’s blockade of Gaza has restricted residents’ freedom of movement. The ongoing Israeli colonialism and military occupation, now 76 years old, are to blame. Currently, Israel is even ignoring calls from the UN Security Council and UN Human Rights Council for a ceasefire, and has deployed ground troops to Rafah.
International solidarity movements for Palestine, involving students, workers, and the general populace, are intensifying against Israel’s genocidal actions. We stand with Palestinian feminists striving to survive and transform their land into a dignified and equal space, refusing to silently witness the erasure of Palestinian women’s voices through ethnic cleansing.
Hence, we declare:
We, as feminists, oppose imperialism
Israel exploits its historical victimhood from Nazi genocide to equate anti-Zionism with anti-Semitism. Zionism, which aims to establish a Jewish nation-state, is an ideology of genocide that rejects the coexistence of diverse religions and ethnicities. Israeli settler colonialism involves direct military occupation and expansion of settlements, and the expansion of its politics, economy, and military power through its alliance of racism and militarism is being obscured . Israel is not only exploiting Palestinian workers under military occupation and blockade of Gaza but also proudly conducts real-time arms testing on Palestinians, continuously profiting from it.
Imperialist nations, including the United States, have supported Israel’s military occupation. Specifically, the U.S. has increased military aid to Israel. In essence, the ongoing genocide is a result of colonialism and imperialism. Thus, feminism is inherently linked to the anti-colonial struggle.
Feminism must break free from Western white-centered and racism. We will go beyond liberalism that justifies the hierarchies of binary gender and race, which patriarchal imperialism has used to legitimize control.
We, as feminists, stand in solidarity with Palestine
We recognize that militarism always instrumentalizes sexual violence against women and minorities. The dehumanization perpetuated by patriarchy is even more blatant in Israel’s genocidal process.
While Israel labels Hamas as the rapist, Israel, is the one that commits sexual offenses. Although sexual violence might seem aimed at sexual gratification, it is merely incidental. The true purpose is to exercise power over another human being, confirming its effectiveness and gaining a sense of efficacy. Israel’s ethnic cleansing of Palestinians is quite similar. For them, genocide is something they do because they can, underpinned by patriarchal imperialist confidence that they can annihilate a group at any time.
The international community, particularly the U.S. and Europe, along with pro-Israel media, are complicit in this, acting no differently than accomplices in rape. The actions of doxxing those who expose injustice, and making them lose their jobs, or be arrested, are akin to hunting.
Israel is the perpetrator threatening the lives and reproductive rights of Palestinian women and sexual minorities, harassing and killing them. Israel, known for ‘pinkwashing’, falsely claims to be a ‘human rights-abiding country’ supporting LGBT pride events in Tel Aviv. However, this support is only superficial, and the actual inequalities faced by sexual minorities are concealed. Moreover, under the current regime, abuse and violence against sexual minorities have increased. Yet, Israel still portrays itself as ‘LGBT-friendly’, unlike ‘homophobic Palestine and Arab nations,’ to justify its violence against Palestinians.
Many Israeli soldiers post pictures on social media wearing women’s underwear they find in destroyed Gazan homes or draping them over their bodies, committing sexual violence and torture. This is indeed sexual violence and dehumanization of Palestinian women. The fact that 70% of the victims of the victims of this mass slaughter are women and children shows that Israel’s genocide is connected to femicide.
Feminism goes beyond gender discrimination and sexual violence; it resists and fights against all forms of discrimination, violence, oppression, and hatred. Feminists who have directed social change can no longer stand by silently.
We stand in solidarity with Palestine from Korea
A temporary ceasefire by Israel cannot protect the lives of the Palestinian people. Now is the time to strongly oppose the Zionist and American rulers, including those who have supported Israel’s military occupation and genocide of Palestinians. A permanent ceasefire, lifting the blockade of Gaza, and an end to the israeli military occupation and colonial rule, which is the root cause, must be achieved.
We oppose imperialism, militarism, and colonialism and demand an immediate halt to the cooperation between the Korean government and the capital with Israel. The Korean government has been expanding arms trade with Israel since the 1990s. Companies like HD Hyundai Construction Equipment, which supplies excavators that trample on the lives of Palestinians, and Hanwha, which collaborates with Israel in the manufacture of military goods, have been whitewashing their image while exploiting workers in Korea. Workers fighting against this stand with the freedom of Palestine. This voice is also our voice.
The fact that a person born on one side of the earth can be deprived of human dignity and decent life, and even brutally lose their life simply because they are Palestinian, tells us that no one on this earth is free from such oppression and slaughter. The cry of Palestine is the cry of humanity. It is the cry of women and LGBTQ+ individuals. It is the cry of all workers and the masses. Let us in Korea respond to the cries of Palestinian women, workers, and the masses.
As feminists, let’s stand in solidarity with Palestine
Feminists are connected with all those who resist the oppression and exploitation of unjust power. Only our unity can end this devastation. In a reality where colonialist genocide exists - the epitome of dehumanization and othering - no one can be free. Without the liberation of Palestine, there can be no liberation of women.
We stand with Palestinian feminists. The Palestinian people have lived resisting under harsh conditions for 76 years. Before the Genocide, Palestinian feminists were actively opposing the imperialism of Israel and the patriarchy spread across Palestinian land, against all forms of violence. We want to share the joy of liberation with the Palestinian feminists who survive the genocide.
Korean feminists commit to joining the struggle of Palestine with a sense of urgency that we cannot afford to lose our comrades. The only power that can stop the slaughter and occupation is our resistance. As human dignity is being stripped away in real-time, we feminists will shout to stop the massacre.
Without the liberation of Palestine, there is no liberation of women!
Israel must permanently leave the lands from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea!
Israel must stop the genocide and end the military occupation!
The Korean government must stop arms trade with Israel!
